We are seeking an experienced Safety Engineer with a strong background in the rail sector to support key system safety activities during the concept stage of an HS2 project.
The successful candidate will be responsible for hazard identification and management, risk analysis, safety documentation and assurance activities. You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders, including the Independent Safety Assessor (ISA), to ensure safety requirements and assurance activities are effectively addressed throughout the early stages of development.
Key Responsibilities
Concept Stage Safety
- Conduct and facilitate hazard identification and analysis during early-stage concept development.
- Support the development and implementation of system safety activities and processes.
- Contribute to the identification and assessment of safety risks associated with emerging designs and concepts.
Hazard Management
- Identify, record and manage system hazards throughout the safety lifecycle.
- Produce detailed hazard reports and supporting safety analysis.
- Summarise key analytical findings and communicate outcomes effectively to multidisciplinary project teams.
Standards & Compliance
- Apply EN 50126 principles and requirements throughout the relevant safety lifecycle.
- Ensure safety analysis, processes and documentation comply with applicable rail industry standards and project requirements.
- Support the production of evidence required to demonstrate safety compliance.
Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) Interface
- Act as a key technical point of contact for the Independent Safety Assessor.
- Respond to ISA review comments and technical queries.
- Coordinate and facilitate the provision of supporting safety evidence and documentation.
- Contribute to the overall safety assurance process.
Technical Interfaces
- Interface with ergonomics and human factors requirements.
- Consider and integrate ETCS system considerations into safety analysis and safety cases.
- Work collaboratively across engineering disciplines to ensure safety requirements are appropriately incorporated into system development.
Reporting & Documentation
- Author clear, concise and technically robust safety reports.
- Produce safety cases, compliance documentation and supporting technical reports as required.
- Present safety findings and recommendations to technical and project stakeholders.
Key Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Proven experience working as a Safety Engineer within the rail industry.
- Working knowledge of ETCS within railway systems.
- Strong practical experience applying EN 50126 to rail signalling, infrastructure or other railway systems.
- Experience undertaking hazard identification, hazard management and risk analysis.
- Experience producing technical safety documentation and reports.
- Experience working with or interfacing directly with an Independent Safety Assessor (ISA).
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary engineering and project teams.
