Belfast Grand Central Transport Hub

8 Oct 2025

The Belfast Grand Central Transport Hub represents one of the most significant transport infrastructure developments in Northern Ireland, created in response to increasing demand across both rail and bus networks. Formerly the Great Victoria Street (GVS) Railway Station and Europa Bus Centre, the site was redeveloped by Translink into a modern, integrated interchange designed to transform connectivity across the region.

The original GVS station was demolished and replaced by the new Grand Central Station, constructed on a brownfield site directly north of the existing location. The new facility features eight platforms, including four island platforms, and was delivered alongside major civil, track, E&P, signalling and telecoms works. Crucially, the project was completed while maintaining live rail operations through careful staging and tie-ins up to Westlink Junction.

As part of Phase 1A of the NIROC migration strategy, signalling control for the corridor (rom Portadown SB fringe at Lisburn through to Belfast Grand Central and onward to Botanic Station) was successfully transferred to the new Northern Ireland Rail Operating Centre (NIROC), marking a major milestone in network modernisation.

MPI Limited were engaged as a preferred supplier to Babcock, supporting the installation, testing and commissioning of the signalling works across the programme. Our scope covered a wide range of critical assets, including location cases, lineside signalling equipment, REBs, upgraded signal posts, and the wider transition of control systems into NIROC.

To deliver this, MPI deployed a fully integrated workforce model across installation, testing and commissioning phases. This included installation supervisors, team leaders and installers, alongside structured test teams comprising Testers in Charge, Principle Testers, Functional Testers and Assistant Testers. At peak delivery, MPI also supported commissioning activities with large-scale multidisciplinary teams, ensuring safe and efficient system integration across all stages.

Throughout the project, MPI’s Technical Head of Signalling worked closely with project management teams to undertake technical and safety audits, ensuring all documentation, assurance processes and on-site safety checks were maintained to the highest standard. This reinforced MPI’s ongoing commitment to safety, compliance and operational excellence across all rail projects.

The Belfast Grand Central Transport Hub was successfully commissioned and brought into service on 11 August 2024, marking a major milestone in Northern Ireland’s transport infrastructure. The official opening followed on 13 October 2024, with MPI continuing to support final commissioning activities and wider NIROC-related works to complete this transformative programme.
