Fenix Rail Systems, in partnership with VolkerFitzpatrick, were awarded the contract to deliver a new £70m Metro Train Depot at Gosforth Park in Newcastle. The redevelopment introduced a modern, purpose-built rail facility featuring advanced signalling and control systems designed to improve operational efficiency and future-proof depot operations.
As part of the signalling delivery, Fenix Rail Systems implemented a state-of-the-art train control interlocking system to manage train movements safely and efficiently within the new depot environment.
MPI Limited supported the project across all stages of signalling testing and commissioning. Our involvement included the development of robust Test Strategies and Test Plans, alongside the provision of experienced Test Management and specialist testing teams to ensure safe, structured delivery throughout the programme lifecycle.
Working closely with the project team, MPI provided a Test and Commissioning Manager (TIC) to lead the creation and implementation of test documentation and oversee commissioning activities. Our teams carried out testing and commissioning of new equipment, supported modifications to the local operating panel, and ensured system updates were accurately reflected in operational controls.
MPI also supplied Principal Testers to conduct workstation testing on the interlocking system, alongside up to five dedicated testing teams responsible for pre-testing, cable testing, and full commissioning activities.
Through a structured and safety-led approach, MPI helped ensure the successful delivery of key signalling elements within this major depot redevelopment, supporting the introduction of modern rail infrastructure at Gosforth Park.
