Job Title:ETCS Systems Engineer

This role is for an ETCS Systems Engineer, capable of fulfilling the System Engineering tasks on the various ETCS On-board projects. The ETCS Systems Engineer will play an important role in Customer Requirements Management, management of the technical design, the definition of the System and Sub-system Design, Train Data capture, ETCS configuration data and subsequent production of detailed Product Requirements for Project Teams to implement.

The ETCS Systems Engineer role will also provide support to the management of the technical interfaces between the Siemens ETCS system, the Train Design Authority and the internal and external Design Teams ensuring that the technical solutions meet the operational and performance requirements.

The jobholder will be capable of maintaining strong communication links with Global R&D, the Project Delivery Teams, the Train Design Authority, the Siemens design team, fitment and approval partners and the client. They will be capable of adapting their deliverables based on the needs of these stakeholders.

Success in the role will be measured primarily by the on-time delivery of allocated deliverables meeting quality targets as agreed with the ETCS Systems Engineering Manager.  The ETCS Systems Engineer will be expected to plan their own work within their overall agreed targets.

This role will help play a major part in delivering the ETCS on-board systems necessary as the business demands.  The role will focus on the front or early part of the lifecycle activities of the System Engineering process for all ETCS on-board projects.

The ETCS Systems Engineer role will report to the ETCS Systems Engineering Manager. The ETCS Systems Engineer role will support the technical work streams for all ETCS on-board projects.

What are my responsibilities?

The Systems Engineer will be expected to fulfil for allocated tasks, particularly in the earlier lifecycle activities of the allocated project.

  • Customer Requirements Elicitation, Capture and Analysis

  • System Requirements Elicitation and Specification

  • System Design, Analysis and Specification

  • Product Requirements Specification

  • Management of Interface Risk

  • Train Data Capture

  • ETCS Configuration Data

  • Support the technical Management of the Train Design Authority & internal and external Design teams to achieve coherent design solutions

  • Support the owners of all Technical Interfaces

  • Product Design Analysis and Specification

  • Integration of component subsystems into a single system

  • Supervision of Configuration and continuous improvement of test rigs in support of system integration

  • Analysing competing technical solutions

  • Working within a Configuration Control system (including raising and applying Change Requests etc.)

  • Providing estimations for system engineering activities

  • Progress reporting

  • The candidate will also be expected to maintain an appreciation of new technologies and their application to support ongoing deliveries

  • Self development with a view to professional accreditation

 

 

What do I need to qualify for this job?

  • Knowledge of the Siemens ETCS Product

  • Knowledge of the Siemens ETCS Product Data Process

  • Knowledge of the Siemens ETCS Product Configuration Process

  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience) in an engineering, scientific or numerate discipline (essential)

  • Knowledge of the systems engineering life-cycle, cost awareness and awareness of processes involved in other engineering disciplines (essential)

  • Understanding of project delivery processes (ideal)

  • Proven track record and experience of working within the rail sector (preferred)

  • Experience of safety critical systems (preferred)

  • Able to contribute to continuous process improvement (essential)

  • Experience of working to industry quality and safety standards (essential)

  • Experience of railway technologies and their application (preferred)

  • Understanding and practical experience of applying railway or ETCS standards (ideal)
