Job Title: Civils Clerk of Works

Location: Glasgow

Contract: Ongoing

The Position:

Subway Modernisation activity continues on the Buildings, Infrastructure, Rolling Stock, Signalling and Telecoms workstreams, and ongoing site support is required to ensure contractor works are robustly and safely managed.

Live and upcoming works:

Subway Modernisation related works include;

  • Yard and Depot signalling and telecoms installation works

  • Tunnel signalling and telecoms installation works

  • Station signalling and telecoms installation works

  • Platform Strengthening and enabling works

  • Station Civils & Cableway works

  • Stabling Shed signalling and telecoms installation works

  • Associated misc. works

Further project work will include:

  • Tunnel Lining works

  • Depot Yard Improvement works

  • Depot Yard retaining wall works

  • Negative Feeder Replacement works

  • Ramps & Turnout remedial works

  • Misc. further works

A Client-side Clerk of Works is required to provide full-time project supervision support to the workstreams listed, with holiday support/cover for the further projects when required.


Job Description:

The Civils Clerk of Works will provide guidance and specialist expertise to take a leading role, primarily on nightshift, supervising various projects, and their duties will include;

  • Perform supervisory duties appropriate to the type, scale, and phase of the project in accordance with best practice construction management techniques and SPT operational requirements.

  • Liaising with SPT Operations to provide suitable access possession arrangements where applicable.

  • Attend progress and technical meetings as required.

  • Producing daily and weekly progress reports on all ongoing projects to the PM.

  • Assist with reviewing, if required, any applications for payment and provide comments in relation to specific works undertaken.

  • Reporting any work issues arising and challenging contractors on on-site delivery on quality, cost, programme, and safety.

  • Develop and maintain up-to-date records of all project works that can be accessed during dayshift.

  • Effectively manage the interface of information between nightshift and dayshift operations.

  • Advise the Project Manager (PM) of any potential schedule or cost overruns, if applicable.

  • Undertake on-site H&S audits and present findings.

  • Report any safety incidents directly to the relevant PM.

  • Identify and monitor any snagging works if applicable.

  • Provide schedule forecast information for all ongoing project activities if required.

  • Make the PM aware of any potential change controls applicable to the project.

  • Monitoring of project activities undertaken by partner and external organisations on behalf of the company.

  • Ensuring all necessary permits and competencies are issued and are in place prior to commencement of works.

  • Ensure the scope of works is undertaken in accordance with any specific contract specifications and terms and conditions.

  • Ensuring quality of workmanship and that specification of the contract is fulfilled to the satisfaction of the company.

  • Advise the PM of any design non-conformances, if applicable.

  • Carry out measurement of works to validate applications for payment as required

  • Ensuring all works are carried out in a safe working environment.

  • Liaise with the project team and Principal Contractor to develop and challenge the project programme and delivery methodologies.

  • Raising/reporting Near Misses and Incidents reporting system.

  • Reviewing commissioning and certification documentation.


Role Capabilities:

  • The individual will have significant/relevant work experience.

  • The individual will have significant/relevant work experience carrying out Clerk of Work duties (preferably within a railway environment). In addition, the individual should have a wide knowledge Civil related methodologies & techniques and relevant health and safety regulations. Experience in Rail infrastructure would be beneficial.

  • The individual is also required to have experience with carrying out snagging duties, health & safety audits, and report writing. Communication and interpersonal skills are essential, and the individual should be happy to work as part of a team.

  • The individual will require to provide safety critical medical and Drugs & Alcohol documentation and pass a Personal Track Safety course.


Key Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Engineering & construction support to the Buildings & Infrastructure projects

  • Liaison between the project team and Principal Contractor.

  • Assist in the definition, specification, coordination, planning, execution, review, and continuous improvement of site controls and reporting.

  • Liaise with and support the Project Managers to ensure effective quality control during delivery and hand back of improvement work.

  • Input to lessons learned for contracts nearing completion and collate and assess learning to advise ongoing works.

  • Provide technical guidance to the improvement of the asset database and register.

  • Ensure site safety is managed and audited at all times.

  • Undertake other duties as may be required that fall within the purview of the post as required.

  • Raising/reporting Near Misses and Incidents via reporting system.
