We are offering a user focussed engineer the opportunity to work as part of the Human Factors / Ergonomics team. As a Senior Human Factors Engineer, you will work with world class projects to provide effective, technically advanced, and user focussed products.

The HF team provide expertise to:

  • Tenders: Identifying innovative solutions for demanding clients.

  • Research & Development: Developing a family of signalling, train control and protection systems.

  • Projects: Delivering complex turnkey Mainline and Mass Transit (Metro) railway solutions.

The Person

You need to be enthusiastic in the subject of human factors / ergonomics and the benefits it can bring. You should be proactive, eager to acquire new skills and willing to learn from others. An aptitude for understanding multidimensional problems, and complex products, systems and development processes is essential. As are excellent inter-personal and communication skills, the talent for compromise, and the ability to work in a team and under your own initiative.

What are the responsibilities of the position?

  • Provide technical expertise in human factors to resolve issues on the Project

  • Work closely with engineering teams to promote a good understanding of human factors capabilities and ensure smooth and effective integration of human factors throughout design, development and implementation.

  • Apply human factors methods and design principles, and the company process to ensure:

    • All human factors requirements for the system and its components are identified,

    • User requirements and capabilities are considered throughout design, development and implementation,

    • Users are engaged appropriately throughout the project lifecycle,

    • Compliance with relevant human factors standards and good practice,

    • The delivered product or system is fit-for-purpose, meets user needs, promotes effective, efficient and safe working, and is acceptable to users.

  • Build good working relationships with equivalent human factors staff in external parties.

  • Chair customer and user group sessions, to obtain feedback on the proposed user interfaces.

  • Participate in the formal reviews of project or product documentation, as required by the company process.

  • Participate in project meetings as required (e.g. milestone reviews, change control board, progress reviews, etc).

  • Deliver high quality deliverables as required to record human factors activities and provide evidence of compliance with human factors processes and client standards.

  • Supervise other engineers in these tasks.

What do I need to qualify for this job?

  • HNC, HND, Degree or equivalent in Psychology, Ergonomics, Human Factors or a related discipline.

  • Experience of working in large, multi-discipline teams.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to produce high quality documentation to tight timescales.

  • A willingness to work towards Registered Membership of the CIEHF.

  • 5+ years experience of application of anthropometric data with SammieCAD or equivalent Ergonomic assessment tool.

Desirable Attributes

  • Experience working in a safety critical industry, preferably Rail.

  • Experience of supervising other engineers.

  • Competence in the use of Microsoft Office packages (WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT etc).
